What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns help fix your teeth when they’re severely damaged and a filling won’t be enough. They’re simply a tooth-shaped cover that fits over your existing natural tooth to protect it, restore your smile and allow you to eat your favourite foods again.

Here at Casa Dental, we offer individually handcrafted dental crowns made from high-quality porcelain material that look and feel like your own teeth. We can use them to:

  • Strengthen teeth that have been weakened by decay, a large filling or root canal treatment
  • Protect fractured, cracked and worn teeth
  • Improve the shape, alignment and shade of a tooth
  • After root canal treatment, to help strengthen the tooth
  • Fix severe discolouration
  • Correct irregularly shaped teeth or spacing issues

What happens when you get dental crowns fitted?

Before you get dental crowns fitted, we’ll ensure that they’re right for you. That means we’ll invite you for a consultation appointment where we can discuss your options, answer any questions and check the health of your mouth.

Then we’ll ask you to return for your first appointment where your dentist will prepare your existing tooth for the crown to be fitted. This can involve removing any decay or damaged tissue, cleaning your tooth and shaping it in preparation for your crown. They will then give you a temporary crown until your permanent crowns are ready.

Your dentist will then take a scan of your natural teeth and send them to our lab technicians where we can create your custom-made porcelain dental crown.

Around two weeks later, you’ll be ready to have your permanent crowns fixed onto your tooth.

1. What happens after you have a crown fitted?
After you have a crown fitted, you may feel some discomfort such as gum soreness or sensitivity. This usually lasts for just a day or two and is easily treated with over-the-counter painkillers.
2. Is the treatment painful?
No. Getting a crown fitted is entirely pain-free. This is because your dentist will use a local anaesthetic during the procedure to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease. If your tooth is dead, you may not need this anaesthetic.
3. How do you look after a crown?
Dental crowns are designed to last for many years so you can continue to enjoy your favourite foods and smile with confidence. However, like your natural teeth, you need to take care of them by brushing and flossing twice per day, visiting your dentist for your regular check-ups and avoiding hard, sticky or chewy foods.
4. How long does a porcelain dental crown last on a tooth?
You can expect your handcrafted dental crown to last anywhere between five and fifteen years if taken care of. Speak to your dentist for detailed aftercare advice.
